Suspicious Fire Alice Springs

Police

Alice Springs Police are calling for assistance from the public following a unit fire in Kilgariff Street yesterday.

Alice Springs Fire and Rescue units attended the fire at around midday and managed to control the situation quickly, there were no injuries but by the time the blaze was extinguished it had spread to two adjoining units.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Richardson said the unit in which the fire started was unoccupied at the time.

“Fire Officers determined the origin as being on the ground floor of the vacant apartment which then spread quickly to the upstairs rooms.  Luckily the two units next door were promptly evacuated and no one was hurt.”

A crime scene was established around the units which were extensively damaged.

“At this stage we are treating the fire as suspicious and we would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time.  Somebody may have seen someone acting suspiciously around the units immediately prior to the fire or someone acting strangely after the fire had taken hold.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Richardson said the smallest detail could help investigators discover the cause.

“If you can help police with their inquiries please contact them on 131 444 or alternately phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

Investigations are continuing.
