Northern Investigation Section Detectives have summonsed a 34 year-old woman to appear in the Katherine Magistrates Court for unlawfully assaulting a person and making a false declaration to Police.
The charges arose after Detectives investigated claims that she was assaulted whilst being conveyed in the rear of a Police vehicle after being taken into Protective Custody in the early hours of April 28th, 2012.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Bedwell said it had been alleged that the woman was punched in the mouth by another person when inside the vehicle and that one of her teeth was knocked out in the incident.
“A thorough investigation by Detectives found no evidence to support this version of events."
Detective Sergeant Bedwell said Police take all reports seriously and when these turn out to be false it is disappointing and an unnecessary drain on Police resources.
