Structural Fire – Peppimenarti

Police

The prompt action of Police Officers and members of Peppimenarti Community have prevented a family home from being destroyed by fire.

Remote Sergeant Andrew Dudley said Police were conducting a patrol of the community at around 3pm yesterday when they noticed smoke coming from one of the lots, on arrival they witnessed two children running from the yard of the house.

“It appears the rear tyre of an All Terrain Quad Bike has caught alight from a fire burning behind it.

“Police utilised a garden hose to douse the fire without effect due to poor water pressure.

“The fire has developed quickly engulfing the rear of the house after fuel from the quad bike spilled out onto the patio."

A fire tender sourced by the local Council and several fire extinguishers from the Peppimenarti School were utilised in preventing the fire from developing further.

“During this time Police were able to enter the house and retrieve personal documents and belongings of the residents who weren’t home at the time.”

"The fire was extinguished at around 5pm. This prevented the fire from spreading further and only resulted in smoke and water damage to the interior of the house.” Remote Sergeant Dudley said

Police and members of the community involved were treated for smoke exposure and later released.
