Police are urging people to slow down on the roads and adhere to speed limits in the southern region.

Sergeant Conan Robertson from the Southern Traffic Operations Unit said motorists do not obey or are often not aware of the speed limits on main roads in the region.

“There has been confusion regarding the speed limits on the Lassetter Highway and Larapinta Drive in the Southern Region with three people being apprehended for speeding on Larapinta Drive yesterday afternoon, seemingly unaware of the 110km/h speed limit,” Sergeant Robertson said.

“Motorists should be aware the 130km/h speed limit only exists on the Stuart and Barkly highways in the southern half of the Northern Territory.

“It is everybody’s responsibility to check the speed limit signage and not exceed the maximum speed.

"Speeding by 10km/h over a two hour journey may save you a few minutes but it significantly increases your risk of a crash.

“Police spend a lot of time patrolling highways and regional roads and there is a good chance that any time you speed you will lose demerit points or even worse your life.”
