Serious Assault on Police - Alice Springs

Police

A 29-year-old man remains in police custody facing charges for numerous offences, including Assault Police, following an incident at Indarpa Camp overnight.

Police attended the camp at approximately 8.30pm in response to a report of a domestic disturbance.

On attendance, the offender attacked one Police Officer, punching him repeatedly to the head and face, and then bit him on the inner thigh and assaulted him in the groin region.  The offender then picked up a broom and proceeded to strike both officers with the broom, one officer receiving injuries to his hand during this secondary attack.

Police will allege that the male interfered with Police issue capsicum spray in an attempt to further incapacitate the attending officers.

The violent episode eventually came to an end when Police were able to subdue the man by deploying a taser.  The man was transported to hospital for assessment where he currently remains in police custody.

Both Police Officers were also treated at Alice Springs Hospital, with one officer requiring x-rays to be taken in the wake of the serious assault. This officer was also treated for cuts and abrasions to his face, neck and upper arms, swelling and soreness.

Superintendent Brent Warren said the officers involved were lucky not to have sustained more serious injuries.

“It is totally unacceptable to both the community and to Police for Officers to be attacked whilst carrying out their duties.

“Police will not tolerate this level of violence in our communities, and neither should the public,” he said.
