A group of 12 people were located safe and well yesterday after their vessel experienced mechanical problems off the coast of Numbulwar.

Senior Sergeant Tony Deutrom from Alyangula Police Station, said the group, from Umbakumba and Angurugu Communities, departed Numbulwar in a recreational fishing vessel bound for Groote Eylandt on Wednesday evening.

“The vessel encountered mechanical difficulties and broke down a short way into their journey,” said Senior Sergeant Deutrom.

“The occupants managed to get the vessel to shore, approximately 40km north east of Numbulwar, and used their mobile phone to call Emergency Services for help.

“Local Police and community members searched into Wednesday evening, without success.

“Police recommenced the search at first light on Thursday. Police from Alyangula and Rangers joined the search utilising a fixed wing aircraft and a Rangers vessel. The party of 12 were located in good spirits on a beach near Hart River at around 10:40am. The Rangers conveyed all of the occupants to Bickerton Island.

“This was an excellent outcome, and a great example of how Police and the community have come together to avert a potential tragedy. I’d like to thank Rangers, Numbulwar Police and community members for their participation in the search.

“Police will be speaking to the group further to ascertain if any marine safety offences have been committed.”
