SA Man on Drugs Charges, Cash Seized from WA Man - Alice Springs

Police

A man will face the Alice Springs Magistrates Court this morning on drugs charges after Police allegedly found him in possession of 4.5 kilograms of cannabis.

Alice Springs Superintendent Jo Foley said a team of Officers were conducting random breath tests south of Kulgera when a Drug Detector Dog had a positive result to the Adelaide man.

“Members from the Southern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, the Southern Drug Operations Unit and Kulgera Station were conducting a vehicle checkpoint on the Stuart Highway on Friday when they stopped a vehicle in which the 53-year-old man was a passenger,” Superintendent Foley said.

“At about 11pm, Members stopped a white Toyota Landcrusier station wagon. Drug Detector Dog Yona provided a positive response to the man and a subsequent search allegedly found 10 cryvac packages of cannabis in steel pipes on the roof-rack of the vehicle.

“The total weight of the cannabis was 4.5 kilograms.

“If the drugs were sold in remote Northern Territory communities they could fetch up to $100 per gram, meaning this man could make up to $450,000.

“We’re very happy that these drugs did not make it to our communities. We all know only too well the destruction drugs cause to the social fabric of our communities.

“The man was charged with:

Supply Commercial Quantity Cannabis;

Possess Commercial Quantity Cannabis.”

In a separate, unrelated incident, a 62-year-old man from Western Australia will also face the Alice Springs Magistrates Court this morning after Police seized $22,000 from him.

Superintendent Foley said the man was apprehended near the intersection of the Tanami and Stuart highways during a Police traffic operation yesterday.

“The man, who was the driver of a Holden Rodeo, was apprehended at about 9.45am near a random breath testing checkpoint,” she said.

“A search of the vehicle found $21,810 in cash in plastic containers in the vehicle.

“Police will allege the cash was from the sale of drugs.

“The man was charged with:

Possess Tainted Property and a number of traffic offences.”
