Road Closure Nets First Driver - Arnhem Hwy

Police

A 24-year-old man has been summonsed to appear in court for failing to obey the direction of a ‘Road Closed’ sign.

Police stopped the vehicle two kilometres past the warning sign on the Arnhem Highway, about half-past-one yesterday afternoon.

“The Arnhem Highway near the Windows on the Wetlands has been the subject of flooding for days.” Said Acting Sergeant Michael Whiting.

“There has been a multitude of warnings from Police and the Department of Construction and Infrastructure for motorists not to ignore the road closure signs.”

“The signs are there to prevent tragedy and people need to abide by them.” Said Act Sgt Whiting.

“The last thing we need is for drivers to become stuck and put their life and the lives of rescuers at risk.”

The man has been summonsed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on the 19th of April 2012.

The maximum penalty for Driving on a Closed Road is a 13-thousand dollar fine.
