Over 650 drivers were tested in a random breath test (RBT) lockdown in Palmerston on Friday evening.

Acting Superintendent Daniel Shean said between 7:00pm on Friday and 2:00am on Saturday Police established several RBT stations in an attempt to identify, detect and apprehend drink drivers across Palmerston.

“A 39-year-old man was arrested after returning the highest breath alcohol content with a reading of 0.159%,” Acting Superintendent Shean said.

“Three drivers were summonsed to appear in court after returning a medium range breath alcohol content and one driver was detected driving under the influence of an illicit substance.

“Police issued 8 fines for offences such as using hand held mobile phones and driving unregistered vehicles.

“A female was issued with an infringement notice for behavioural offences near an RBT station. The offender sat in proximity to the RBT station and used verbally offensive language as people proceeded through.

“Our aim is to reduce the number of injuries and deaths on our roads by educating drivers on road safety.

“Despite the relatively low number of people nabbed over the limit, we will continue to push the message that if you drink and drive – you will be caught.

“There is no excuse for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs and it is everybody’s responsibility to keep the roads safe.”
