Police are investigating the escape of a prisoner from the Low Security Cottages at the Alice Springs Correctional Centre overnight.

Alice Springs Watch Commander Phil Emmett said 19-year-old John Arthur Palmer was last seen at the cottages just after 8:00 pm last night. He was reported missing to Police shortly before 11:00pm.

“Mr Palmer is described as being of Aboriginal appearance with olive skin and a light build.  He was last seen wearing a prison-issue plain dark green T-shirt and blue jeans.

“A recidivist property offender, we believe that Mr. Palmer may commit unlawful entries or steal vehicles to finance his freedom,” said Watch Commander Emmett.

Police believe that he poses no risk to the community however they advise that he is not to be approached if sighted, and for police to be contacted.

Police have issued a photo of Mr Palmer and anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
