Police Urge Caution as Centre Revs Up For Finke

Police

Northern Territory Police will be taking pole position against anti-social and unsafe behaviour during this year’s Finke Desert Race.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said the popular event had grown from a local institution to an international spectacle and that the NT Police were working closely with event organisers with the aim of keeping people safe.

“Every year there are great stories of success and perseverance from competitors but equally there are sad tales of stupidity and injury from spectators who attend without sufficient planning, thought or with disregard for the welfare of themselves and others.

"In the last couple of years there have been people found riding on car roofs, in the back of utes or on bonnets being towed behind cars. Others are driving unregistered and uninsured vehicles, driving drunk or under the influence of drugs.

"While the area of the event is out of town, it will still be considered a public place and people will be legally liable for inappropriate, unlawful or anti-social behaviour. If you do the wrong thing you can expect the attention of Police.”

Sergeant Robertson said that everyone has their role to play in ensuring the event is a success.

“Police would like nothing better than seeing this year’s event turn out to be an enjoyable and hassle-free weekend.  For that to happen we ask organisers, officials, spectators, competitors and members of the community work together and with Police to help us keep everyone safe.”
