Police Find Body on Tiwi Islands

Police

Northern Territory Police have found the body of a man who was reported missing after his dinghy capsized.

The man was one of five people on the tinny that was swamped while attempting to return to the Islands from the mainland at dusk yesterday evening.

Four of the men had managed to make it to shore near Elly Point Creek and reported that they could see the man in the water but lost sight of him as the light faded.

Sergeant Paul Willmington from Pirlangimpi Police Station said the upturned tinny was sighted from the air this morning and shortly after the man’s body was found washed ashore just after 9am.

“Police utilised air and sea resources to conduct an intensive search for the missing man.  Unfortunately the man was deceased when he was discovered this morning.”
