Police Evasion Leads to Crash - Alice Springs

A 23-year-old woman has been arrested after attempting to evade Police and crashing into a tree.

Just after 9pm last night Officers attempted to pull over a vehicle on Kraegan Street to conduct a breath test.

“Police activated lights and sirens and the vehicle of interest began to slow down.” Said Superintendent Cathy Bennett.

“It’s alleged the driver turned into Telegraph Terrace before sideswiping the Police vehicle and accelerating away.”

“A pursuit commenced for about five kilometres before the female driver failed to negotiate turning onto Kekwick Avenue from the Stuart Highway and crashed head-on into a tree.” Said Supt Bennett.

“The woman ran from the car but was caught by Police and arrested. She returned an alleged blood alcohol reading of zero-point one-three-six percent.”

“Unfortunately her male passenger wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and suffered head and facial injuries and is being treated in the Alice Springs Hospital.”

“Fortunately his injuries aren’t considered life threatening.” Said Supt Bennett.”

“Investigations are continuing and charges are pending.”

“An internal inquiry into the incident is also being conducted and no further details will be released until the completion of the inquiry.” Said Supt Bennett.
