A 57-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition in Alice Springs Hospital following a crash on the Stuart Highway last night.

Detective Acting Sergeant Kate Hamlyn said Police received a report that the man and a 49-year-old male passenger were travelling south along the Stuart Highway in a Holden station wagon when their vehicle ran out of fuel.

“The victim is alleged to have left the vehicle, approximately 1 kilometre north of Tennant Creek, and attempted to walk to the town when he was struck by a passing vehicle at approximately 8pm,” Detective Acting Sergeant Hamlyn said.

“The offending vehicle failed to stop and continued on in a southerly direction.

“The victim received serious injuries and was conveyed to Tennant Creek Hospital and later flown to Alice Springs.

“Southern Major Crash Investigators are currently at the scene and the southbound land of the highway is likely to remain closed for a majority of the morning.

“I urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who may notice a vehicle in the Tennant Creek area with new damage to the front end, to contact Police on 131 444.”
