Operation Thresher - Alice Springs - Update

Police

Alice Springs Police have crossed the half way mark for Operation Thresher, which has already seen 95 people arrested for various offences.

A total of 24 people have been arrested in relation to unlawful entry offences, 12 people arrested for breach of bail relating specifically to property offences, one arrest for robbery and five arrests for receiving stolen property relating to unlawful entries.

Detective Acting Superintendent Travis Wurst from the Southern Investigations Division said the highly visible operation has seen a significant reduction in property crime compared to the same time last year.

“From an anti-social behaviour viewpoint, we have been meeting with local business owners to identify shifting hotspots so we can place Police resources in the right place, at the right time, for maximum benefit to the community.  An example of this has been the consultation with the operators of Northside Shopping Complex and the issues of anti-social behaviour.  Through this relationship, we have managed to reduce the occurrence of negative behaviour in that location.

“So far Operation Thresher has seen 62 infringement notices issued for various offences such as public drinking and street offences, along with 35 infringement notices issued for traffic related offences.

“Police have destroyed 995 litres of alcohol, issued 28 banning notices and placed 677 people into protective custody so far.

“We are committed to keeping the people of Alice Springs safe. This operation, which is not over yet, is an excellent example of our commitment to reducing the affect of these crimes on the community.” said Detective Acting Superintendent Wurst.

Operation Thresher will continue until the end of January.

To coincide with the conclusion of the operation and, as part of the Business Beating Crime initiative, Alice Springs Police will be hosting a free public forum in relation to current crime trends and how businesses can continue to operate without being targeted by criminals through avenues such as internet and credit card fraud.  Any business owners and operators that would like to attend can contact the Chamber of Commerce to express an interest.  The forum will start at 5:30 pm on Wednesday 1 February in the Andy McNeill Room at the Alice Springs Town Council. Information attached.
