Old Australian Currency Stolen – Alice Springs

Police

Alice Springs Police are warning people to be on the look out for old Australian currency following the theft of a large amount of cash from a home in Gillen.

Acting Superintendent Michael Potts said that the home on Pedler Avenue was unlawfully entered on Sunday night.

“It appears as though offender/s have entered the home through an unlocked side door between 8:30 pm Sunday and 12:00 am Monday,” Acting Superintendent Potts said.

“They have then rummaged through the house, locating the cash and three bottles of alcohol.

“The 71-year-old home owner returned home at midnight and immediately reported it to Police. The victim had been saving this money for years and storing it in his home. The stolen cash is made up of mainly $50 and $100 notes but also old paper money, including denominations from $1 through to $10.

“If anyone is presented with this money, I urge you to contact Police on 131 444 with as much information about the other person as possible.

“I think it’s a good time to mention also, the importance of locking your home. This appears to have been opportunistic and could most likely have been prevented if the home had been properly secured.”
