Missing Tourist Found - Katherine

Police

Police have located a 68-year-old male tourist who was reported missing yesterday evening in Nitmiluk National Park.

Senior Constable First Class Travis Edwards from the Territory Response Group (TRG) said the man was found safe and well early this morning.

“The man set off on the Baruwei Loop yesterday afternoon and when he didn’t return, his wife reported him missing,” Senior Constable First Class Edwards said.

“It appears the man took a wrong turn on his way back and became lost.

“Up to 30 people were involved in the search, including members from the TRG, Katherine Police, Katherine Fire and Rescue and local Park Rangers.

“Police conducted both ground and air searches and located the man with the assistance of a helicopter at around 8:00am.

“The man has been taken to Katherine Hospital as a precaution.

“I would like to commend the swift actions of the local Police and Park Rangers, as well as the TRG Members who searched through difficult terrain throughout the night.

“Although this is the best result we could have possibly hoped for, I again urge anyone setting off on walking trails anywhere in the Territory to take necessary precautions.“
