Missing man located - Alice Springs

Police

A man who went missing after becoming separated from his family in Redbank Gorge has been located.

Senior Sergeant Louise Jorgensen said a helicopter located Mr Kenny at approximately 5:30 this afternoon.

“Throughout the day Park Rangers, Hermannsburg Police and NT Emergency Services personnel conducted extensive land and air searches in an attempt to locate him.

“He was successfully located this afternoon after taking his shirt off and using it to wave to the helicopter as it flew over.

“It appears he has walked to the top of the Gorge and was unable to find his way back, following a track he thought would take him back to the road.  He was located approximately seven kilometres south east of where he was last seen.

“He has since been flown by helicopter to the Redbank Gorge Car Park for assessment by the Hermannsburg Health Clinic and is currently on his way to the Alice Springs Hospital for a further assessment.

“While Central Australia is a beautiful place, it can also be a very unforgiving one if you get lost. In this case this man was very lucky, considering he had very little water with him.

“The outback can be a deceiving place in terms of distance and direction, the simplest of walks can often go wrong. Planning and preparation are vital. In this case I would like to acknowledge the hard work put into the search by NT Emergency Services, Park Rangers, local Police and all others involved in the day’s search.  It was a positive result,” said Senior Sergeant Jorgensen.
