NT Police can confirm that a three metre crocodile was shot dead in a billabong at the Gumarrirngbang Outstation just before 12 noon today.

Senior Sergeant Shaun Gill from the Territory Response Group said an examination of the crocodile revealed what is believed to be human remains in the contents of the stomach.

“Further forensic testing will be conducted in Darwin to determine if the remains are human and if found human, the identity of the person,” said Senior Sergeant Gill.

“This is now a matter of investigation and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

“Members from the Territory Response Group, local members, members from the Water Police Section, a ranger from the Crocodile Management Unit and members from the community commenced an extensive land and water at first light this morning.

“Everyone involved in this search has been working under difficult conditions. This is a heartbreaking outcome for the family and the community".

Out of respect for the family Police will not be commenting on specifics of the investigation or specifics about the remains located.

NT Police remind Territorians and visitors not to become complacent when it comes to crocodiles. Be CROCWISE - croc danger is real, so don't risk your life.
