Man to Face Drugs Charges - Tennant Creek

Police

A man will face court this morning on charges of supplying a commercial quantity of cannabis after Police allegedly found him in possession of almost $800,000 worth of the drug.

Detective Sergeant Glenn Leafe said Police allege that at about 8.30 on Friday night the man, who was driving a Holden stationwagon, was apprehended at the Ali Curung turn off along the Stuart Highway.

“Police apprehended the vehicle and on inspection allegedly found a cryvac bag containing cannabis,” Detective Sergeant Leafe said.

“The driver of the vehicle, a 46-year-old, was arrested and the vehicle seized.

“On further inspection of the vehicle, Police allegedly found a further 32 cryvac bags of cannabis, creating a total of 33 bags.

“Police allege each bag was found to have about 453 grams of cannabis.

“The cryvac bags had allegedly been secreted in potato crisp packets and packed into plain white boxes. The boxes were in full view in the rear of the vehicle.

“Police believe that the quantity of cannabis, if sold in individual deal bags in Darwin, would have a street value of $748,400; if sold in remote communities this value would be significantly higher.

“This is a drug that contributes to a significant amount of anti-social behavior and Police are very happy to have seized this before it was sold.

“The man was charged with:

Supply Cannabis - Commercial Quantity.

“He was remanded in custody and will appear before the Alice Springs Magistrates Court this morning.”
