Man Charged with Causing Reckless Danger and Firearms Offences - Katherine

A 29-year-old man is due to appear in Katherine Court today to face several charges including endangering a Police Officer and possessing an unlicensed firearm.

Police noticed the man driving recklessly in a maroon Ford sedan on Tuesday afternoon.

Detective Senior Sergeant Clinton Sims said the man was speeding in excess of 160km/hr and was pursued by Police, however he failed to obey Police directions and stop the vehicle.

“It is alleged that when the vehicle became bogged in a ditch, an Officer who was in the process of apprehending the offender lost his footing on the loose gravel behind the vehicle. The offender proceeded to reverse the vehicle at speed towards the Officer who narrowly avoided being hit,” Detective Senior Sergeant Sims said.

“Police apprehended the man and seized the vehicle, which has been identified as stolen.

“A search of the vehicle revealed a sawn off shot gun with shells and drug paraphernalia.

“Positive tests indicate the offender was under the influence of illicit substances at the time.”

 

The alleged offender has been charged with the following:

  • Aggravated unlawful use of a motor vehicle
  • Unlawfully possessing property
  • Drive at a speed dangerous
  • Drive in a manner dangerous
  • Fail to comply with direction
  • Recklessly endanger serious harm
  • Assault a member of the Police Force
  • Possess firearm unlicenced
  • Possess ammunition unlicenced
  • Possess firearm under the Influence
  • Driver with prohibited drug in blood
  • Driver drive under the influence of drugs
