Man charged with attempted murder and arson - Darwin

Police

A 30-year-old man will appear in Court today in relation to a house fire and the attempted murder of a man in Stuart Park on Saturday 8 September 2012.

Superintendent James O’Brien said the alleged offender met the 30-year-old male victim in Darwin City at about 5:00 am.

“After a brief discussion, the two men caught a taxi to an unoccupied residence on Voyager Street in Stuart Park,” said Superintendent O’Brien.

“A short time after the victim fell asleep, it is alleged the offender stole the victim’s wallet and phone and caught a taxi to a service station on Daly Street, where he purchased petrol and a lighter.

“Police will allege the offender then returned to the residence and poured petrol throughout the dwelling before igniting the fuel and fleeing the area.

“Thankfully a small explosion has managed to wake up the victim and he was able to escape without injury. Police and Fire and Rescue members were quick on the scene and the fire is estimated to have caused $50,000 in damage.

“An extensive investigation immediately commenced and as a result of a joint operation involving the Australian Federal Police, the alleged offender was arrested at the Darwin International Airport attempting to board a flight with a one way ticket yesterday.

“Last night Detectives from the Serious Crime Squad charged the man with attempt murder, arson, unlawful entry and stealing and he will appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court today”.
