Man arrested for taxi assault - Darwin

Police

A 28-year-old man has been charged with assault following an incident which occurred in Woolner less than 24 hours ago.

Senior Sergeant Peter Lindfield said at around 6:15pm yesterday, the man entered the taxi on Mitchell Street and asked to go to Woolner.

“It is alleged the driver was told to stop the vehicle at the intersection of Chong Wee Avenue and Manilla Place and, upon asking for the fare, was verbally assaulted,” Senior Sergeant Lindfield said.

“It soon escalated and resulted in the 27-year-old male taxi driver allegedly being head butted whilst the two were standing outside of the vehicle.

“A member of the public came to the assistance of the victim and contacted Police.

“Members arrived and arrested the man a short time later. He remained in custody overnight and has been charged with assault and fail to pay a taxi fare and bailed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on 29 May 2012.”
