Man arrested for taxi assault - Darwin

Police

A 20-year-old man will appear in court this afternoon in relation to a robbery and assault on a taxi driver.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Chris Board from the Serious Crime Squad said the man was located and arrested in Palmerston late yesterday afternoon.

“It is alleged the offender and a female accomplice entered the taxi on Mitchell Street at around 1:00am Saturday morning and asked to be driven to Karama,” Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Board said.

“Whilst en route to the location, the man changed his mind and asked to be taken to Henry Street in Stuart Park.

“Upon arrival, it is alleged the offender punched the 43-year-old taxi driver several times to the face.

“The driver left the vehicle and a short struggle occurred when the alleged offender attempted to steal the car. The man and female fled the scene with the driver’s phone, wallet and a sum of cash.

“We are asking the female involved in the incident to hand herself in to Detectives.

“We would like to remind people that taxis and minibuses have security cameras installed. If people are silly enough to commit crimes whilst in one of these vehicles, we will identify those involved.”

The 20-year-old man was charged with robbery, unlawful use of motor vehicle and aggravated assault and will appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court this afternoon.
