Man arrested for hammer rampage – Darwin City

A 29-year-old man has been arrested and charged following several incidents that occurred overnight and early this morning in Darwin City.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Chris Board from the General Crime Section said the man was apprehended around 7:00 am this morning.

“It was reported to Police that a man had been seen on Foelsche Street carrying a sledge hammer,” said Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Board.

“It will be alleged that the man came into possession of a sledge hammer before damaging a number of vehicles on Austin Lane and Foelsche Street.

“Windows of several businesses and two parking meters were also damaged in the alleged offender’s rampage.

“Police are continuing their investigations and urge anyone that witnessed any of the abovementioned events, or any other suspicious behaviour in the area overnight, to contact them directly on 131 444.

“He has been charged with criminal damage (x10) and going armed in public. He is to appear in the Darwin Magistrate’s Court at a later date.”
