Kava Seized - Katherine

With a seizure of 290 kilograms of kava in Katherine, NT Police have now seized more than 10 tonnes of Kava since January 2009.

Detective Senior Sergeant Clint Sims said Northern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk (SAID) Officers arrested two men aged 29 and 26 on Friday afternoon for attempting to transport kava from Queensland to Arnhem Land.

“The men were stopped by Police approximately 300 kilometres south of Katherine at 3.30pm,” Detective Senior Sergeant Sims said.

“A search of their Toyota Troop Carrier revealed 290 kilograms of kava, divided into approximately 9,500 deal bags.

“If this kava had been sold in Arnhem Land as intended, it could have potentially returned a street value of $290,000.

“That is a significant amount of money leaving our communities to line the pockets of offender’s who are intent on exploiting those in our remote areas are.”

The two men were charged with possessing and supplying a commercial quantity of kava and were remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court today. Their vehicle was also seized.
