Kava Haul Intercepted Nhulunbuy

Police

Northern Investigation Section Officers, in conjunction with Dog Operation Unit Members, have seized approximately 50 kilograms of Kava at the Nhulunbuy airport.

Police will allege two men, aged 54 and 32, had sourced the kava from NSW before transporting it to Queensland and catching a flight to the Northern Territory.

Sergeant Andy Bedwell said drug detection dog ‘Nugget’ gave a positive reaction to the men as they disembarked the flight at about 8pm last night.

“The kava had been secreted into two small wheeled suitcases and one backpack.  The two men were arrested and taken to the Nhulunbuy Police Station where they were charged with Supply Commercial Quantity of Kava.”

Both were remanded in custody to appear in the Nhulunbuy Magistrates Court today.
