Hit and Run - Fatal - Humpty Doo

Police

Police are calling for public assistance after a suspected hit and run incident on Zamia Road in Humpty Doo this morning.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant John Worrall from the Major Crash Investigation Section said Police received the report just before 3:30 am after a member of the public located the body of a man on the road.

“It appears the man was walking his bike along the road when he was struck by a vehicle, which has then left the scene,” Senior Sergeant Worrall said.

“Initial investigations suggest that the vehicle was heading towards the Arnhem Highway when it struck the man.

“It appears the vehicle has then conducted a u-turn before returning to the crash scene and stopping for a period of time. We believe the vehicle has then accelerated heavily from the location of the scene.

“The identity of the deceased is yet to be confirmed.

“The vehicle sustained some damage as a result of the crash, and Police are following a number of leads to identify the vehicle. I urge the driver of the car involved, or anyone who has information either about the crash or the identity of those involved, to contact Police on 131 444”.

Members from the Major Crash Investigation Section, Crime Scene Examination Unit, Major Crime Squad and Serious Crime Squad are today conducting further investigations into the crash.

Zamia Road will remain closed while crime scene examinations continue throughout the day.

Police are calling for anyone who witnessed the crash or may have further information to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The Territory road toll now stands at 44 compared to 37 for the same period last year.
