Floodwaters Rise at Palumpa and Peppimenarti

Police

Residents of three houses have been evacuated in Palumpa as floodwaters rise in the area due to recent heavy rainfall.

Rising water from a nearby billabong has inundated the houses and residents have been relocated to higher ground.

“The local health clinic also has water beginning to run through it but staff and supplies have moved and are operating out of the school.” Said Sergeant George Watkinson

“The community has plenty of fresh water and the shop is fully stocked.” Said Sgt Watkinson.

In nearby Peppimenarti, earth moving equipment is being used to construct a levy around four vulnerable buildings in the community.

“Almost 450mm of rain has fallen on the community in almost 48 hours.” Said Remote Sergeant Jason Conroy.

“A creek near the community has gone from a trickle, to 70 – 80 metres wide up to eight metres deep.”

“There’s still about 60 metres to go before the floodwater will affect buildings and we’re keeping a close eye on the situation.” Said Remote Sgt Conroy.
