Firework Destroys Car Katherine

Police

A vehicle has been destroyed and a resultant grass fire has burnt out a large area after a Katherine resident shot a firework into the car.

Fire and Rescue Members attended the scene in Katherine East at about 5pm yesterday and extinguished the blaze before any other property was threatened.

Police have issued a $282 on the spot fine to a 36 year-old female and seized a backpack full of unexploded fireworks.

Acting Superintendent Gavin Kennedy said that it is a timely reminder for the public that it is an offence to throw, ignite, explode or possess fireworks outside the approved period which ended at 11pm on July 1st.

“Residents should be aware that Police have a zero tolerance to the discharging of fireworks outside the approved time frame.  In this case the resident was very lucky more damage was not caused.”

NT Worksafe advises that unexploded fireworks can be handed in to their offices in Darwin and Alice Springs.  In other areas it is advised that the fireworks are well soaked in a bucket of water and broken up before being disposed of in a rubbish bin or if possible, buried.
