Fatal - Pedestrian - Tennant Creek

Police

The Northern Territory road toll now stands at 37 after the death of a pedestrian near Tennant Creek overnight.

Detective Sergeant Glenn Leafe said the crash occurred shortly after 7:00 pm on the Stuart Highway, approximately 15 kilometres south of Tennant Creek.

“It is believed a 49-year-old female was travelling with a group of 10, in two separate vehicles, when an argument broke out in one of the vehicles and both vehicles pulled over to the side of the road,” said Detective Sergeant Leafe.

“Initial investigations indicate that some of the group were standing on the road when the female was struck by a passing Toyota Landcruiser. The female was transported to the Tennant Creek Hospital, however died prior to arrival.

“The 59-year-old male driver of the Landcruiser drove to Tennant Creek where he reported the incident to Police. He was breath tested and returned a negative result.

“Detectives from the Tennant Creek Investigations Unit are continuing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

The Territory Road toll now stands at 37 compared to 28 for the same period last year.
