Fatal - Pedestrian Struck - Alice Springs

Police

A 28-year-old woman remains in Police custody following a fatal crash which occurred in Alice Springs last night.

Senior Constable Steve Langdon from the Southern Major Crash Investigation Unit said a 40-year-old woman was run over at around 6:20pm on a dirt road near the old drive in.

“It appears the victim and a number of others were travelling in a Mitsubishi Magna on a dirt track behind Yirara College when the incident occurred,” Senior Constable Langdon said.

“It appears the passengers left the vehicle as the car stopped, however the 28-year-old driver is alleged to have driven off striking the victim and pinning her beneath the vehicle.

“Police and St John Ambulance members attended the location and lifted the vehicle off the woman, however she was declared deceased at the scene.

“The driver is expected to be charged later today and at this early stage, it appears alcohol may have been a contributing factor.”

Investigations are ongoing and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.

This now takes the NT road toll to 36 compared to 25 for the same period last year.
