Police

The road toll has risen to 28 following a single vehicle rollover near Nhulunbuy last night.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant John Worrall of the Major Crash Investigation Section said Police and Fire and Rescue crews responded to a report of the incident at around 9:15pm on the Central Arnhem Highway, 40 kilometres west of Nhulunbuy.

“A 77-year-old woman, the single occupant of the vehicle, was located in a white Nissan Patrol in bushland ten metres from the road,” Senior Sergeant Worrall said.

“The vehicle was travelling in the direction of Nhulunbuy when the incident occurred.

“Members of St Johns Ambulance attended the scene, however the woman was already deceased.

“The cause of the crash is yet to be determined and investigators from the Major Crash Investigation Section will attend Nhulunbuy today.

“Police are once again urging motorists to take their time and drive to the prevailing road and traffic conditions.”

This now takes the Territory road toll to 28 compared to 23 for the same period last year.
