Fatal Crash - Darwin CBD

Police

The road toll has climbed to 24 compared to 20 for the same time last year following a fatal crash in Darwin’s CBD this morning.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant John Worrall from the Major Crash Investigation Section said Police and Fire and Emergency crews attended the scene at the intersection of Daly and Cavenagh Streets around 10:00am.

“It appears the male driver of a van failed to stop at a red light and collided with a scooter,” said Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Worrall.

“Members of the public performed first aid on the 76-year-old-male victim until St John Ambulance arrived on the scene. The man was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital and died a short time later.

“Police wish to thank those members of the public who provided assistance following the crash.

“This is a tragic reminder that motorists need to take care and obey road rules whenever they are behind the wheel.

“The intersection of Daly and Cavenagh Streets has been blocked off and Police advise motorists should avoid the area.

“We are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or the events leading up to it, who has not yet contacted Police to do so on 1800 333 000.

“Exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined and a report will be prepared for the coroner.”
