Investigations are continuing into the death of a 25-year-old male motorcyclist after a crash in Cossack, approximately 10 km outside of Katherine, yesterday afternoon.

Senior Constable First Class Mark Soligo from the Northern Crash Investigation Unit said initial investigations indicated the Holden Commodore Utility was travelling along Florina Road when it slowed down to make a right-hand turn into Phoenix Park Station.

“It’s believed when the ute slowed down to turn, the Honda CBR 600RR motorbike moved into the right-hand lane in an attempt to overtake the ute.

“As the ute turned, the motorbike continued in the right-hand lane and collided into the side of the ute, resulting in the rider being thrown from his motorbike.

“The 25-year-old male rider was wearing a full faced helmet at the time of the crash but it came off as a result of impact. Sadly he died at the scene. The 19-year-old male driver suffered only minor injuries,” said Senior Constable First Class Soligo.

As a result of the crash, the motorbike caught on fire igniting a small grass fire which was extinguished by Fire and Rescue members.

Investigations to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing, however at this stage it is believed excessive speed was a contributing factor.

The Territory road toll stands at 15 compared to 9 for the same period last year.
