Elderly Man Assaulted Update - The Narrows

Police

Detectives from the Serious Crime Squad have arrested a 30-year-old man as part of their investigation into the stabbing of a 72-year-old man in The Narrows in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police and St John Ambulance were called to the Shiers Street units where the elderly man had suffered a stab wound and punctured lung, as well as head injuries.

“Investigations have determined the 72-year-old approached a group of people who were drinking and causing a disturbance near his unit about 2am, to tell them to be quiet,” Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Chris Board said.

“It appears the victim in this matter had armed himself with a small tomahawk, prior to approaching the group.

“It will be alleged an altercation took place and the elderly man was disarmed before being stabbed and assaulted.

“At no time do Police condone members of the public arming themselves – for protection or otherwise – to resolve disputes.

“It’s lucky no one was more seriously injured or killed.”

The 30-year-old remains in Police custody and is assisting with inquiries.
