Easter road toll rises to three - Darwin

Police

The Northern Territory Easter road toll has risen to three following a fatal motorcycle crash in Howard Springs.

Detective A/Senior Sergeant John Worrall from the Major Crash Investigation Section said a 47-year-old man was reported missing to Police at about 5:45 yesterday afternoon after he failed to return home from a ride that morning.

“While Police were conducting enquiries into the man’s whereabouts, a group of quad bike riders discovered the man’s body on an un-named dirt track off Gunn Point Road, approximately 12 kilometres from the Stuart Highway turn-off, just before 6:30 pm,” said Detective A/Senior Sergeant Worrall.

“Members from the Major Crash Investigation Unit attended the scene and conducted investigations well into the night and returned this morning to complete further examinations in daylight.

“Initial investigations suggest the man was travelling back towards Gunn Point Road when he lost control on a bend in the track, throwing him off the motorcycle. It appears the man was not wearing a helmet at the time.

“After enquiries with nearby property owners, Police have confirmed the location of the crash is not on private property and therefore this death will be considered part of the road toll, having occurred in a public place.”

The 2012 road toll now stands at nine compared to two for the same time period last year.
