Drunk Drivers Continue to Frustrate Police

Police

Southern Traffic Operations Officers apprehended another two high range drink drivers in Alice Springs last night prompting a stern warning from Police.

Sergeant Conan Robertson has described the behaviour of the drivers as a ‘disgrace’

“These drivers have a death wish and they don’t care who they take with them.”

The Officer in Charge of the Southern Traffic Unit said some drivers were not getting the message after a 36 year-old man returned a reading of 0.248 BrAC after being stopped by Police just after 10pm last night.

“This driver had his licence disqualified for eight years in 2011.  He was driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.  This is a stupid, selfish and reckless act and getting this offender off the road has likely saved lives.”  Sergeant Robertson said.

Earlier in the night a 27 year-old female had been taken into custody after returning a reading of 0.182 BrAC while also driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

Both cars had numerous open alcohol canisters inside the vehicles.

“There is no legitimate reason to drink and drive, it is way past the time for people to behave responsibly and either party at home or if you do go out organise a sober driver, a taxi or even walk.”

Sergeant Robertson said Police would be out in force over the long weekend and urged all people using the roads to do so in a safe, careful and responsible manner.

“We will be patrolling right across the region, including the Finke race area and we want to see people enjoy their long weekend.  We do not want to be cleaning up after a traffic crash because someone was acting like a bloody idiot.  If you are caught drink driving, and you will be, you deserve it.”
