Drug Runner Caught - Alice Springs

Police

A 64-year-old man has had $1990 and his vehicle forfeited to the Northern Territory Government as a result of being found guilty by the courts for running dangerous drugs into the Northern Territory from South Australia.

Detective Sergeant Leith Phillips said members from the Southern Traffic Operations had been conducting highway vehicle checks with the Dog Operations Unit in February 2012 when the man was stopped.

“A search of his vehicle uncovered 15 kilograms of cannabis concealed in 35 vacuum seal bags.”

In September this year the 64-year-old-man was found guilty of supplying a commercial quantity of a dangerous drug into the Northern Territory. He has been sentenced to four years imprisonment with a non-parole period of two years.

Det Sgt Phillips said, “As a result of court proceedings the sentencing judge in the Supreme Court ordered his Toyota Land Cruiser 4WD station wagon and the cash he was carrying at the time to be forfeited to the Crown (Receiver of Territory Monies – NT Government). His vehicle was later sold at auction in Alice Springs for $7500.”

Police continue to actively target drug offenders and those who may support these people.

Det Sgt Phillips said, “This is a clear message which is being sent by the courts to those who think they can traffic drugs into the Northern Territory. If you get caught you will lose your property and spend time in gaol.”
