Driver Charged, Taxi Seized – Alice Springs

Police

An Alice Springs taxi driver has been charged and his vehicle seized after he is alleged to have taken alcohol into a prescribed area.

The 50 year-old man was followed by Police after his taxi was observed at a drive through bottle shop just after 2pm yesterday.

Superintendent Catherine Bennett said the whole community must take responsibility for minimising harm done in the town.

“Police will allege the driver of the taxi was aware the town camp was a dry area and chose to ignore the large sign at the entrance.  All members of the community must abide by the restrictions associated with prescribed areas.

“The actions of this taxi driver are not the ‘whole of community approach’ we would like to see.”

Superintendent Bennett said alcohol was a contributing factor, both directly and indirectly, to the anti-social problems experienced in Alice Springs.

“Police have seized the taxi under the Commonwealth Emergency Response Legislation and will apply to have it forfeited.”
