Double fatal rollover – Ali Curung

Police

The Territory road toll has risen to 12 compared to six for the same period last year following a double fatal rollover which occurred this morning near Ali Curung.

Superintendent Craig Barrett of the Tennant Creek and Barkly Division said the single vehicle rollover occurred on the Stuart Highway at around 11:00am, 4km south of the Ali Curung turn off.

“It appears the couple were travelling north along the Stuart Highway in a Holden Jackaroo when the 60-year-old male driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll,” Superintendent Barrett said.

“Police from Ali Curung and Tennant Creek attended the scene, as well as local health clinic staff and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

“The woman died instantly and the male, who was trapped in the vehicle, died a short time later.

“Major Crash investigators are currently travelling to the scene.

“The road at the crash site, 170km from Tennant Creek, remains completely closed and is likely to remain that way until late this afternoon.

“Police have arranged a diversion around the area, and urge drivers to use caution and to obey all Police direction.

“Police are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the crash and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.”

This now takes the Territory road toll to 12 compared to six for the same period last year.
