Double Fatal - Papunya

Police

The Northern Territory road toll has risen to 32 following a rollover in Papunya overnight.

Detective A/Senior Sergeant John Worrall of the Major Crash Investigation Section said Police received the report of a rollover on Kintore Road, approximately 31 kilometres west of the Papunya Community, just before 9:30pm.

“Initial investigations suggest that the Ford Fairmount was travelling on an unsealed road when the driver lost control on a slight bend. The vehicle has then slid sideways up an embankment on the side of the road before rolling a number of times.

“As a result of the crash a 3-year-old girl and a 29-year-old male have died. The two other occupants of the vehicle have been taken to Alice Springs Hospital. It is believed the 29-year-old male who died in the crash was also the driver.

“Police will investigate to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash however at this stage, it is believed speed and alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash,” said Detective A/Senior Sergeant Worrall.

This now takes the Territory road toll to 32 compared to 23 for the same period last year.
