Police are currently investigating several counterfeit $50 notes circulating throughout Darwin in recent days.

Police have received four separate reports of an imitation $50 note being used at various retail outlets, including Darwin’s Mindil Beach Sunset Markets last night.

The counterfeit notes seized by Police are described as being made of thick plastic and are heavier than the regular $50 note.

The number ’50’ is absent from the clear window panel and the watermark fails to appear when the note is placed under UV lighting.

Sergeant Jason Blake from the Major Fraud Squad said the imitation looks genuine at first glance, however, it does not have the characteristic feel of a regular $50 note.

“We are asking the community to be vigilant when receiving a $50 note and to take the time to check its legitimacy,” Sergeant Blake said.

“If a member of the community does come into contact with a counterfeit note, they should attempt to remember any details surrounding the exchange and hand it into their local Police station.

“Police are calling for public assistance and are urging anyone who has acquired a counterfeit note, or who has information about their production and distribution of the copies, to phone 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“The Australian Federal Police along with NT Police will continue to investigate reports of counterfeit.”
