Concern for welfare - Katherine

Police

Katherine Police and Parks and Wildlife Rangers have spent the afternoon conducting air and ground searches of Katherine Gorge after receiving a report of a missing man and woman.

Superintendent Gavin Kennedy said an unidentified male rang the Katherine Information Centre at around midday today stating that he and his female companion had walked off a walking track and become disorientated.

“Parks and Wildlife Rangers and Police conducted a search of the Katherine Gorge walking tracks on foot, followed by an aerial search with a helicopter until late this afternoon.

“Despite these efforts the couple have not been located. Police believe it is possible the couple have managed to re-orientate themselves with the walking track and have since walked out.

“The personal details of the male caller were not obtained at the time of the call and no information has been passed on to Police as to the identity of the male caller.

Investigations and a coordinated Police and Parks and Wildlife response will continue tomorrow.

Police are asking the man who contacted the Katherine Information Centre to contact Police to confirm they are safe and well. Anyone who knows who this couple is or anyone who may have information as to whether the couple actually did walk out of the Gorge area is asked to contact Police on 131 444.
