Chlorine Bomb Incidents Larapinta

Police

Alice Springs Police are currently investigating four separate incidents involving homemade chlorine bombs in the Larapinta area.

One incident, responded to by Police, involved a homemade bomb imploding inside a letterbox at an address on Grant Road.

“This is the fourth incident of this nature in under a week, and we are treating this as very serious offending,” said Southern Watch Commander, Senior Sergeant Darrell Kerr.

“Aside from the obvious legal ramifications of making and exploding such devices, it must be acknowledged that this is a very precarious practice.

“People mixing these dangerous chemicals are not only endangering themselves, they are also endangering members of the public who may inadvertently be in the area at the time.

“Mixing chemicals can result in a highly unstable reaction which may cause serious burns to eyes and face.  Mixing chemicals in unknown quantities can also cause detonation at unpredictable times.

“It is a criminal offence to damage property, and we will be seeking a prosecution for this dangerous offending.

“We are very interested in speaking with anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area, particularly around Patterson Cresent, Youl Court, Larapinta Drive and Grant Road.

Members of the public are encouraged not handle anything suspicious and contact Police if they have knowledge of people committing these offences.

Contact Police on 131 444 or report suspicious activity anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
