The Caesars of Property - AFU

Police

The NT Police Asset Forfeiture Unit has now seized almost 10-million dollars worth of property, gained from illegal dealings and the proceeds of crime in the Territory.

“Established within the NTPF in 2003, the AFU targets the ‘Mr Bigs’ of criminal activities who pedal drugs and live lavish lifestyles, while the community suffers from their drug distribution, greed and illegal activities.” Said Acting Superintendent Peter Schiller.

“Mostly, the property is derived from drug offending, involving supply, commercial and trafficable amounts.”

“Anything you can imagine has been bought with money from the proceeds of crime.”

“Cash, cars, houses, boats, jewellery and motorcycles are just some examples of property seized and forfeited to the Territory Government.” Says Det Act Supt Peter Schiller.

“Courts can rule that it is ‘more likely than not that property is a result of criminal offending’ and the onus is placed on the offender to explain how they can legitimately afford assets in question.” Says Det Act Supt Schiller.

“With the continued dedication of the Asset Forfeiture Unit and the courts, offenders can no longer serve a prison sentence and return to luxurious homes with cars, boats and motorcycles in the garage, while the rest of the community works hard to build respectful lives.”

“The Territory was one of the first jurisdictions in Australia to introduce ‘Unexplained Wealth’ laws and because of its success, other states are following the Territory’s lead.”

“Criminals are on notice, the only way crime pays is directly to the Territory Government.”

Anyone who suspects criminal activity or people gaining from crime is encouraged to call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. You can remain anonymous if you so wish.
