A 28-year-old man has been charged in relation to an aggravated assault of an 18-year-old man in Darwin’s CBD this morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Board said the assault occurred on the corner of Peel Street and Mitchell Street at around 2:30am.

“The victim is being treated for serious injuries and remains in a critical condition in Royal Darwin Hospital,” Detective Senior Sergeant Board said.

“Detectives from the Major and Serious Crime Squad have today spoken with several witnesses who have contacted Police.

“The alleged offender will remain in Police custody and is due to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on Tuesday 7 August 2012.

“Police ask anybody who may have witnessed the assault to contact Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

The alleged offender is charged with:

• Serious harm
• Assault a defenceless person
