Police

Maranboy Police, with the assistance of the Katherine Dog Unit and Katherine Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk (SAID) have concluded a two day operation.

Police based a vehicle checkpoint at the King River rest stop on the Stuart Highway, approximately eight kilometres north of the Central Arnhem Road intersection.

The operation was aimed at intercepting vehicles bound for the outlying Aboriginal Communities along the Central Arnhem Road and Roper Highway.

Acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Littman said Police had identified the road for special attention.

“This road has traditionally been used to supply outlying communities as far away as Ramingining and Maningrida with illegal substances such as cannabis, kava and alcohol.” Acting Senior Sergeant Littman said.

During the operation Police stopped 33 vehicles and seized approximately 21 grams of Cannabis.

A total of five people were apprehended in relation to drug related offences.

Police and SAID officers will continue to operate random checkpoints throughout the Northern Territory to disrupt the trafficking of illegal substances into Aboriginal communities.
