Arson Investigation - Yarrawonga

Police

Members of the Serious Crime Squad, Tactical Response Group, and Drug and Organised Crime Squad this morning executed a search warrant at Yarrawonga in relation to an arson attempt overnight.

Yesterday evening Police and fire services were called to a Toupein Road Yarrawonga business premises, were a grass fire was taking hold on a vacant block next to the business where heavy machinery is located.

“It’s alleged the fire stared from ‘firebombs’ being thrown over the fence.” Said Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Chris Board of the Serious Crime Squad.

“It appears further Molotov cocktails were directed at machinery but fortunately fire didn’t take hold of any of the equipment at the site.”

“Police guarded the crime scene overnight, with a fire examiner, crime scene examiners and Detectives from the Serious Crime Squad also working throughout the night. This resulted in officers today raiding a nearby address for further evidence in relation to the incident.” Said Det Act Sen Sgt Board.

“This type of behaviour is very serious offending which could have resulted in major damage.”

“Two men aged 39 and 31 have now been arrested and are assisting Police with inquiries.” Said Det Act Snr Sgt Board.

Police expect the pair to be charged later this evening with Arson and firearm related offences.
