Aggravated Assault - The Narrows

Police

Detectives from the Serious Crime Squad are asking for any witnesses or anyone with information in relation to an assault that took place on the Stuart Highway on Tuesday afternoon to contact them.

Investigations to identify and apprehend the offenders in this incident are ongoing, with several vehicles undergoing forensic testing and CCTV footage being analysed.

Superintendent James O’Brien of the Crime Division said the assault occurred in the inbound lane of the Stuart Highway, near the Winnellie Post Office, at about 5:15 pm.

“A 58-year-old man was travelling in a vehicle when he observed that traffic was stopped by a man on the road. When he attempted to assist in removing the man from a dangerous situation, it is alleged he was set upon by a group of about five men of Aboriginal appearance aged in their twenties,” said Superintendent O’Brien.

“During the alleged assault the 58-year-old victim was struck to the back of the head, with what is believed to be a rock thrown forcefully by the primary alleged offender, before he commenced punching the victim. Several more offenders then came out from the fringe of the road and are also alleged to have assaulted the victim or threatened other road users to hinder them from assisting the victim.

“The courage and persistence of members of the public who intervened ensured that the attack was not prolonged and the victim was able to be taken to seek medical assistance for his injuries.

“We as a community need to rally together and send a message to the perpetrators of such violence that it is unacceptable. This attack was both vicious and cowardly so I ask for anyone who may have been in the area at the time of this incident to contact Police.

“I also plead to those members of our community who may know the perpetrators of this violent attack to think of the victim and contact Police to assist with the current investigation.”

One of the offenders is described as being a male of Aboriginal appearance, mid 20’s to early 30’s, fit to solid build, approximately 190 cm tall, with long dark curly shoulder length hair and short facial stubble. He was not wearing a shirt and was described as wearing a pair of football club shorts with a blue and yellow side strip & club badge on the front.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the assault or who has information that could assist with the investigation to call 131 444 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
